And now for a history lesson. This is an ancient Greek drinking container, known as a kylix. On it, is artwork done by a man who addresses himself as Douris. A caption inscribed near the two figures writes, "Chairestratos is handsome." This might explain why the winged figure (thought to be Eros, god of desire), is embracing a youth (possibly Chairestratos, himself) in such an erotic fashion. A more popular opinion suggests this scene portrays Zephyros (god of the West Wind) and Hyakinthos, the object of the god's desire. Either way, this work makes an impressive love note from the recipient's admirer.
